Wine Tasting tips

If tasting multiple wines, start out with sweeter lighter bodied wines and proceed to heavier styles. For example, say for 6 wines a Sparkling Demi-Sec Chenin Blanc, then a Sauvignon Blanc, dry rose, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc.

  • Swirl the wine, then smell for fruit, floral notes, Oak.

  • Swirling releases the ethers & esters, chemical compounds that naturally occur in the winemaking process thus accelerating the aroma & bouquet qualities of the wine.

  • Taste the wine, allow the wine to aerate on your tongue for about 15 seconds. This allows for the wine to be present at all of the tasting parts of the palate (sweet, sour, bitter, salty, savory).

What should you be thinking about when tasting the wine?

  • Sweetness (front of the tongue)

  • Acidity (sides of the tongue)

  • Bitterness (back of the tongue)

  • Tannin, acidity found in black coffee and tea. This has a chalky sensation to it. Usually found in red wines or white wines aged in wood.

  • Fruit and Varietal Characteristics (The smells and the body of the wine).

  • Aftertaste, whether you choose to spit or swallow the wine. The overall balance of the components of the wine are exhibited.

The sign of the great wine is a long, pleasurable finish. Always have some sparkling water handy to keep the palate clean and fresh. Taste with many people. Each of us have different tastes and olfactory experiences.  Some people have very little tastebuds. These people can enjoy the spiciest foods without breaking a sweat. Some are "Supertasters". People with an extraordinary number of tastebuds very sensitive to varying degrees of taste. People may have differing olfactory experiences based on their upbringing.

Tasting with many people and engaging in such allows for different perspectives to be shared.

Wine tasting is an adventure and a celebration of life.
